a 'secret' augmented reality art on a painted traffic signal box in Brisbane

      • Painting a Traffic Signal Box

The Brisbane City Council owns and manages over 1,000 Traffic Signal Boxes (TSBs) which house the electronic controls for traffic lights.

Artforce Brisbane keeps the city vibrant by permitting Brisbanites to design TSBs, bringing the colorful stories of Brisbane communities to the streets, one intersection at a time!

In February 2021, I was fortunate to be assigned a traffic signal box that I can use as my creative vehicle to express some positive social messaging. "YOU GOT THIS" serves as my personal affirmation and a reminder to others that "hey, some situations can be difficult but things will eventually work out."

Starting as clueless and inexperienced when it comes to public art, allow me to walk you through my journey of highs and lows, of pride and second-guessing myself, of self-loathing and acceptance.

Adjacent to a bus interchange and located at the cultural precinct, TSB0400 draws heavy foot traffic even on weekends, making it challenging to paint during working hours.

Despite distractions, compliments from passers-by and strangers taking time to stop and chat would be the silver lining. Didn't expect my work-in-progress to be conspicuous, especially when all I wanted is to become discreet and even invisible!

All-nighters have been pulled off - catching the sun set, and seeing the sun rise. As tiring as that may sound, I always end my day with a pat on the back, telling myself, "You got this!"

      • Augmented Reality

As I'm into Design and IT, I had to integrate art with technology!

To experience this digital extension, install the Artivive app on your phone. Sufficient lighting is needed so best to do this at daytime!
